RECOVERY STARTS HER

The History of the 12-Step Program

The Big Book started out as a written guide meant for those who couldn’t attend in-person treatment programs, and it expanded into the model for the entire AA program. The 12-Step Program has since been adopted as the model for a wide range of addiction support programs, including Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Gamblers Anonymous (GA), and more.

Today, it is estimated that over 2 million members of AA use the 12-Step model as their approach to recovery from addiction to drugs, alcohol, and behaviors. The Steps have had a global impact and have saved countless lives over the near-century of existence. The 12-Step model has offered solace, serenity, and deep comfort for people suffering from addiction all over the world. It has provided millions of people with a better, more clear approach to life, offering hope and a new foundation for people to restart their lives. The 12-Step Program has become a foundation and a cornerstone of drug and alcohol recovery centers, addiction programs, and residential treatment facilities across the globe.

Through jotting down his experience and ideas, Bill Wilson has offered an effective and miraculous method that has stood the test of time, saving and helping countless individuals on their journeys to recovery. Every recovery looks different, and everyone recovers differently, but the 12-Steps are always offered and encouraged by treatment centers everywhere.

Prevail Recovery Center is no exception. As a 12-Step affiliated treatment center with locations in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Knoxville, Tennessee, we offer our patients an array of treatment options, but we always encourage the use of the 12-Step approach. We believe in personalizing the recovery experience, tailoring our program to our client’s specific needs. Prevail Recovery Center has seen an immense amount of success in patients who opt for the 12-Step approach to recovery.

What Are the 12 Steps?

The 12-Step model, originated by Alcoholics Anonymous, is a spiritual foundation for personal recovery from the effects of addiction. Many 12-Step members have found that these steps are more than just a way to recover from addiction, but they are a guide to a new way of living their lives. 12-Step meetings offer people the opportunity to come together and share in their experiences, passing on their stories and their personal experiences with addiction and with overcoming addiction. Part of the 12-Step model includes passing on the knowledge you gained to help others on their recovery journeys.

That said, the 12 Steps are as follows:

  1. Honesty in admitting powerlessness over the addiction. Denial is common in addicts, and admitting that you have a problem is the necessary first step to recovery.
  2. Faith and believing in a higher power, in whatever form, can help a person realize that there is a plan for them outside of their addiction.
  3. Surrendering control to the higher power that you associate with. Realizing that you cannot recover on your own, but by surrendering self-destructive decisions to a higher power, recovery can be prosperous and long-lasting.
  4. Soul-searching and taking personal inventory. By identifying problems and understanding how your behavior has affected you and the people around you, growth occurs.
  5. Integrity in admitting to the higher power, oneself, and another person the wrongs that have been done. This provides a person with a great opportunity for growth by admitting wrongdoings in front of a higher power and other people.
  6. Acceptance of character defects and being entirely willing to let them grow. Being ready to have the higher power correct any shortcomings to one’s character is elemental of step 6.
  7. Humility by asking the higher power to let go of those shortcomings. Asking a higher power to do something that cannot be accomplished by one’s own self-will or determination.
  8. Willingness to make a list of wrongdoings that have been done to others and amending those wrongs.
  9. Forgiveness through contacting those who you’ve wronged, unless doing so will harm the person.
  10.  Maintenance by continuing to take personal inventory and admitting when you’re wrong.
  11.  Making contact and discovering the plan your higher power has for your life. These steps require seeking enlightenment and connection with the higher power via prayer and/or meditation.
  12.  Service through carrying the message of the 12-Steps to others in need.

Although the 12-Steps are based on the same written ideas Bill Wilson developed in the 1930s, some aspects of the program have changed over time. Believing in God is now not a necessary component of the 12-Steps Program, however the belief in a ‘higher power’ is essential. Higher power can be any external force that a person believes in. The idea behind the 12-Step program today is that by believing in a higher power, someone can find a deeper meaning to life outside of addiction. Higher power can mean anything from religion to spirituality, to prayer or meditation.

Why Choose Prevail’s 12-Step Rehab Program in Fort Lauderdale and Knoxville?

The premise of the 12-Step model is for people to be able to help each other achieve and maintain sobriety and abstinence from substances or behaviors they are addicted to. The ability to influence others can be accomplished through meetings where people can share in their efforts and experiences with overcoming addiction in order to support another’s recovery journey.

The 12-Step model allows for the opportunity to dig deeper into the troubles of one’s past while also looking ahead to the potential of a brighter future. In choosing a 12-Step rehab program, people are able to let go of poor decisions from their past by facing them head on, addressing their wrongdoings, and moving forward in a more positive direction. The 12-Step model makes the road ahead seem far less daunting and far more hopeful.

Recovery is a complex journey, and the 12-Step model offers a simplified, trackable way of overcoming addiction and looking ahead to a prosperous future. Prevail Recovery Center is a 12-Step affiliated treatment center, and we highly encourage our clients to consider the 12-Step model as they aim to recover from their addictions.
